Product Review - Online Backup - OPENRSM CloudBackup
Product Review - Online Backup - OPENRSM CloudBackup
Introduction:
OPENRSM CloudBackup is a service that lets you store files and backup data securely to a nearly unlimited backup to internet vault. OPENRSM CloudBackup has no minimum and no maximum amount of data you can store (unlike other services). You pay a flat fee (which get’s you a BIG datastore) and only pay extra for the actual storage you use in excess of that. It works the same on Windows, MAC, and Linux systems as well.
You can access the CloudBackup drive as a mapped network drive, or use a browser (Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Chrome, etc.), over WebDav or via the local http server. CloudBackup’s default cache (1G, adjustable) gives immediacy to most operations while making changes in the background. The builtin backup utility works well and previous versions are kept if desired. This makes CloudBackup work for backup as well as a remote filesystem since it works with native tools like rsync, robocopy, etc. Block level incremental backup is supported through CloudBackup.

Who needs this:
Due to the versitility of CloudBackup automated backup, accessing files from anywhere, and more is possible. The setup is easy and the interface is both powerful and simple (way better than the competition). So CloudBackup is built for all levels of users who need a safe, secure backup or access files remotely without the restrictions offered by competitor. Or, like me… BOTH. For example: All files, folders, data is in full view. Just like having an unlimited sized SAN. You can simply set it, forget it, and let the scheduler backup any changed files over the internet (encrypted of course).
The Good:
Set it and forget it backups. Set it up to run a backup of folders periodically and you no longer have to worry about harddisk-lifespan or safety of my data. Efficient use of bandwidth. It uses it’s cache as a buffer and only updates changed bytes. So bandwidth use is limited after the first backup. Good control that’s easy. Options for versioning backups/files, limiting bandwidth, detailed use logs. You can get dirty if you want but I hardly ever needed to access the manual. Works with your software and OS. The network drive can be treated like an unlimited size network disk. I use Access, wikipad, and other programs to use the data files directly off the network drive and it works perfectly. It’s also terrific when you set QuickBooks, etc., to use the Network Drive. And it doesn’t make any difference if you have a PC, a MAC, or a Linux machine (or a whole network of them)… It’s as simple as this… It just works.
Possible Concerns:
Depends on your internet connection. Inherent to CloudBackup is your broadband connection. If you have restriced use limits on your broadband connection then your first backup might push it.But, you can control both speed and backup times to your own schedule. But it’s a mute point because of the bandwidth controls and efficient use of the bandwidth you allow. It has to be said I guess I’m always open to do nearly the same for cheaper or free. But CloudBackup has a feature set that surpasses more expensive solutions and is fairly priced.
Why I recommend it:
It’s one of the best solutions to have safe, secure, and painless backup with remote access for your work or home. Together, it’s a great combination. Add the extreme flexibility and I heartily recommend this with no qualms. Paying a small monthly fee to have his peace of mind is worth it for me.
How it Fares:
- OPENRSM CloudBackup has more space and reliability than a local backup.
- Files are still available for all programs with full capability unlike other solutions.
- The backup to internet functionality works as good as local backup solutions.
- Your own backup or sync software can still be used even if you don’t really need to since the backup intervals can be set from every five minutes to once a week.
Conclusions:
CloudBackup is a powerful, flexible, and reliable way to solve data storage issues inexpensivly. It’s a must do unless your on a dialup connection or are heavily restricted with your broadband connection. Solutions that cost less (and may do less) could be available, but I can’t find any. CloudBackup just works for both business and personal use.
